Heterosexism & Homosexuality: The Performance of Privilege & Secrecy in Bahamian Society

Abstract

In an attempt to fill the void of research on the subject of homosexuality in the Bahamas, this paper contends that Bahamian heterosexuals are afforded a privilege that excludes, marginalizes, and discriminates against Bahamian LGBTQ+ people. As a result of this privilege, homosexuality in Bahamas continues to be seen from a heterosexist vantage point, reinforcing the psychological anguish experienced by LGBTQ+ persons all over the archipelago. The crux of the paper examines secrecy surrounding homosexuality in Bahamian society, particularly within the church, the law and the workplace.
