About  Natino

Pronouns (He/They)

Currently residing in The Bahamas, Mx. Natino Thompson is a black non-binary, gender non-conforming, genderqueer individual. They are a pioneer, artist, activist, and iconoclast whose work involves the act of self-introspection. Natino's work prompts us to turn inward, to do the psychological work necessary to bring humanity one step closer to ending unnecessary forms of violence and oppression. Natino intimates several lost perspectives on the world around us that can possibly help liberate us to be more kind to one another, more humane, and smarter about the way we construct our lives within or without the economic system of capitalism.  

Biography 

In May of 2021, Natino obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History and Psychology from The University of The Bahamas. Natino's work centers the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people living within The Bahamas,  as means of confronting, challenging and calling into question national narratives of identity and cultural norms. Natino seeks to create literature that is both, thought-provoking and facilitates the cultivation of a critical consciousness within Bahamian society. Natino’s research interests include several areas of study such as Decolonization, Social Justice, Peace Studies, Gender, and Queer Studies, just to name a few.

In October 2019, while a junior,  Natino’s first paper, “Heterosexism and Homosexuality: The Performance of Privilege and Secrecy in Bahamian Society,” was published in the Yale Review of International Studies. In October 2020, Natino was instrumental in organizing the first Virtual Pride Celebrations in The Bahamas that discussed various topics faced by LGBTQ+ people in the Bahamas and also served as an interim President of The Bahamas Organization of LGBTQIA+ Affairs from 2020-2022. Natino continues to advocate for and participate in creating an inclusive LGBTQ+ community for all community members to feel safe.

 

As a gender and queer theorist, Natino's research informs his advocacy for marginalized groups within the Bahamas. He uses his work to engage in difficult discussions and create spaces, and events that are inclusive for all marginalized groups within the Bahamas. Natino aims to continue addressing social, economic, and political issues in The Bahamas to further efforts of decolonization, as well as challenge systematic methods of oppression, prejudice, and discrimination. Currently, Natino is focused on a number of projects with the intent to build the field of Gender and Queer Studies in The Bahamas.
